Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting Mental Health Act Review Managers (MHARMs). The role of the MHARMs is to conduct independent hearings to review the detention of patients under the Mental Health Act 1983. The role is a statutory duty undertaken on behalf of the Trust Board and is a crucial patient safeguard under the 1983 Act.

Hearings are organised when patients apply for them or may be held at the discretion of the hospital managers. In addition, the Trust holds four MHARMs’ Forums per year. The Forums provide an opportunity for the MHARMs to get together, discuss practice issues and receive training.

MHARMs are required to attending a minimum of six hearings and two Forums per year.

For each hearing undertaken, a MHARM receives a £25 fee plus travelling expenses. Being a car driver is an essential requirement for the role as current Trust mental health sites where hearings are held cover Hampshire, Havant, Gosport, Oxford and Buckinghamshire.
