The New Marston 50+ club is a caring, friendly club that meets every Thursday, except Christmas, New Year and the month of August. It is held at St Michael’s Church Hall, Jack Straws Lane, New Marston, and begins at 2pm and finishes at 4pm. It aims to provide a welcoming, friendly atmosphere, where people can make new friends, chat to old friends, be entertained, and of course enjoy a good old cup of tea and a biscuit, or maybe a cake!

Each week the club has some form of entertainment. Guest speakers come from far and near, talking about a variety of topics, ranging from pantomime dames, apples, animals, to the Oxford canal. Every so often there is a craft afternoon nothing tricky, just something fun to have a go at. Members have made cards, decorated jars, made Easter and Christmas table decorations, and painted pebbles and pots.

The club enjoys a lot of musical activities, singalongs, pianists, musicians playing all sorts of instruments and even dancers. It is lucky enough to have a local primary school that send their little orchestra to play their pieces, and their choir to sing, Headington Girls School also come with more advanced music making. Both schools provide very community spirited afternoons.

From time to time the club enjoys a keep fit session again, nothing tricky but it all helps!

Quizzes keep the brains in order, and of course every so often, it’s time to celebrate with lovely parties! Last May our Spring one had the theme of St. George, as it happened to fall on St. George’s day. Everyone looked the part dressed in red and white. There was a great raffle, super cream tea, and Ted Morse entertained everyone with English anecdotes and music.

September gave us the opportunity to mix party with fund raising, when we had a bring and buy sale along with tea and plenty of cakes for the Macmillan charity. Then of course, it was Christmas, with plenty of carols, a lovely meal with wine! and yes, Santa did come to visit!

Although it’s a 50+ club, many of the members are over 70. In fact, the wonderful, hard working committee adds up in age to over 700! 50+ would really love to have some new, younger members, particularly, as all the committee members are finding certain aspects very demanding. Therefore If you are newly retired, have time on your hands, would like to meet people, or would just like to lend a hand, do please come and see what the New Marston 50+ club is all about. Entrance is £3.00, or 2.00 for members. Subscriptions are £5.00 for the year.
