The arts can transform people’s lives, improve people’s health and well-being, and have a role in solving social problems. The UK has an arts sector which is world-class and wide-reaching: commercial arts such as the music industry and publishing, voluntary arts (49,000 local arts groups involving 9.4 million people) and a publicly funded sector which helps the arts to innovate, widen access and raise quality.
Aesop’s mission is to realise this potential to transform. Health is the initial focus: helping health harness the powers of the arts, and helping the arts gear up to deliver health improvement. Uniquely, they start with health challenges, and nurture ‘Arts Enterprises with a Social Purpose’. These use high quality artists and, from a health point of view, are evidence-based, cost-effective, sustainable and scalable.
Aesop is a bridge-builder between the health and arts sectors helping arts enterprises in health grow. One of their key projects: ‘Dance to Health’, uses dance to help older people reduce the risk of falls. A successful pilot was run in 2015 and 2016 Aesop are now ready to expand to deliver this programme across England and Wales.
The Volunteer Support Officer will champion the volunteering aspects of the ‘Dance to Health’ project using strong relationship building skills to build community links and motivate large numbers of volunteers.
Key Responsibilities include:
-Development and maintenance of a work plan to ensure the successful delivery of all volunteering aspects of the Dance to Health programme
-Working effectively with partners and each local Dance to Health Coordinator to recruit, engage and develop groups of volunteers
-Working with partners to ensure a high quality of volunteer support, including team-building, volunteer recognition and celebration and clear communications
-Devise and implementation of a volunteering evaluation plan including the prompt collection and submission of relevant participant and other data
-Attendance of local and regional Dance to Health steering groups and of National Advisory Groups
Skills and Experience required:
-Extensive prior experience working with volunteers, motivating local communities and evaluating volunteering programmes
-Track record of engaging with hard to reach persons, older people and correspondence with older people’s networks
-Demonstrable interest in health and dance
-Prior success in partnering with statutory and voluntary agencies
-Able to work remotely from programme delivery and to manage multiple groups within a region
-Highly motivated and able to instill enthusiasm in others
-Understanding of older people and of the issues facing this group desirable
-Strong organisational and logistical skills
-Excellent communicator both written and verbally
-Energy, positivity and an inspiring nature.
