Be Free Young Carers research – Oxford City

Be Free Young Carers (Be Free YC) is an Oxfordshire based charity that supports young carers aged 8 to 24. Young carers help look after someone in their family who has a disability, illness or mental health problem. Young carers may provide practical and/or emotional care; every young carer is different.

We understand that there are a lot of positives that young people can experience through caring for a family member. We also know that there can be difficulties/stress factors that can impact on a young person carrying out regular caring responsibilities.

In collaboration with Healthwatch Oxfordshire, Be Free YC is undertaking research to establish:

  1. The overall number of young carers in Oxford city;
  2. The level of support available to them.

The research is seeking the views of the City’s secondary schools, a selection of primary schools, young carers and their families and other community groups. Please encourage young carers and family members to complete a questionnaire. The questionnaires can be found on the Be Free YC website:

The research will influence, and could help design, future young carers’ support in Oxford. A joint Be Free YC, Healthwatch Oxfordshire report on the findings will be published later this year.
