National Citizens Scheme – social action projects needed for young people this summer

National Citizen Service (NCS) in Oxfordshire is currently looking for fundraising, campaigning and volunteering projects for hundreds of teenagers across the county from July 15th– 23rd August. NCS is the government’s largest youth & community programme, enabling young people aged 15 – 17 to gain skills in; leadership, communication, teamwork & independence. Since NCS started back in 2011, over 500,000 young people have completed the programme which is made up of four phases:

Phase 1: Residential

A week’s stay at an outdoor activity; Meeting new people, trying new activities, designed to get the young people out of their comfort zones.

Phase 2: Skills Development

A week’s ‘glamping’ at Hill End, with skills workshops from external providers, which in the past have included: Local PCSO’s, St John’s Ambulance, alcohol sexual health and drug awareness workshops, etc. All workshops are designed to upskill participants and give them confidence.

Phase 3: Social Action

Two weeks spent campaigning, fundraising or volunteering for local charities or organisations, planning and implementing a project that will benefit/improve the community. Previous examples include; volunteering at food banks, decorating at community centres, holding family fun days, sponsored events, lobbying local MP’s about environmental issues, redesigning logos and websites etc.

Phase 4: Celebration Event

Upon completion of the programme, participants receive a nationally recognised certificate. They will have the chance to celebrate all achievements with friends & family at an event at Oxford Brookes University.

As always we are looking to get ahead of the game, to see if there are shared areas of work that we can collaborate on, to create projects for our young people in the summer. We have very fruitful working relationships with many charities and organisations across the county, which have forged some great links in the communities and created some great Social Action projects, but we are always looking for more ways to make the young people’s experience of volunteering a great one, that will encourage them to continue in the future. Last year we had over 1,000 young people taking part on the NCS Oxfordshire programme, volunteering over 50,000 hours to local charities and communities through Social Action Projects raising over £25,000! This would not have been possible without your invaluable encouragement and support of charities and organisations such as yourself. So if you have an idea for a project that our groups of young people could help your organisation out with this summer, please email jon.clark@oxfordshire.gov.uk or if you have any questions.
