Men’s Health Week (10th – 16th June) – Taking the Men’s Health message to social media

Healthwatch Oxfordshire is launching a short video on its social media channels to coincide with Men’s Health Week, June 10 – 16.

The film was made in collaboration with the football team East Oxford United, and the aim is for men to share it on social media to raise awareness and encourage other men to go for their NHS check if they are 40-74, and without a pre-diagnosed condition.

It follows on from research East Oxford United carried out last year into men’s health, which found that while men generally knew about messages for living healthily, there were barriers to this and gaps in understanding about the free health checks available from the NHS. In particular, the project found that men from ethnic minority groups were less likely to take up the checks.The NHS Health Check is a health check-up for adults in England aged 40-74. It’s designed to spot early of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes or dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower this risk. If you are in the 40-74 age group without a pre-existing condition, you can expect to receive a letter from your GP or local authority inviting you for a free NHS Health Check every five years.

The clip was launched at Oxford’s Eid Extravaganza on Sunday June 9 at Cheney School, Oxford, when the teams were playing in a tournament, as well as marking the start of national Men’s Health Week.
