Jacari, Oxford’s oldest student-run charity, is looking for up to two resourceful, motivated individuals to take on the running of the charity from November 2019. This position is a unique chance to manage all aspects of the organisation, and is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in working in the voluntary sector or in a position of leadership and operational management. This position is on a one-year contract with possibility for extension depending on performance and organisational fit.
Jacari provides home teaching for disadvantaged local children who speak English as an additional language. Student volunteers visit children in their own homes for an hour per week to help improve their pupil’s English proficiency and general academic confidence. We recruit volunteers from Oxford University and Oxford Brookes and match them 1-1 with a first or second-generation immigrant, refugee or asylum-seeking child at a local school. These children have been identified by their teachers as needing additional academic support. There are currently around 130 children from 18 local schools who are supported by Jacari.
The Coordinator/s provide ongoing support to volunteers throughout the tutoring experience, as well as assisting our student committee in organising regular events and trips for children and volunteers. These range from small, internal events, such as arts and crafts and board games, to bigger external trips to places such as the Story Museum and the Oxford Ice Rink. Jacari also offers language support to mothers and other local women through our 3 weekly English classes, led by volunteers at local schools.
As the only paid role, the Coordinator/s are vital to the operation of the charity. Working from our central office on Turl St, the Coordinator/s will be in control of the matching up of pupils and volunteers, and will liaise with local schools, parents, university authorities and colleges. Other responsibilities include: managing a student committee; inspiring, recruiting, training, DBS checking, and retaining volunteers from both universities; reporting to Jacari’s board of trustees; day-to-day admin and book-keeping; events organisation and management; providing support and advice to volunteers; forging links with the local community and other organisations; and fundraising from trusts and foundations. The Coordinator will also be expected to show creativity and initiative towards new projects to enable Jacari to grow and thrive.
This is an outlined job description and should not be regarded as an inflexible specification. Responsibilities will be reviewed periodically in line with service priorities, and duties may change, or new duties be introduced after consultation with the post holder. As a term of your employment you may be required to undertake other duties and/or hours of work as may reasonably be required. Remote line management is provided by a Senior Coordinator (based in our Bristol office) and the Chair of Trustees, with an active Trustee Board also in place. The central office space on Turl Street also houses other employees of local charities and social enterprises.
To apply, please contact: Application by covering letter and CV should be sent to Yasemin Acikgoz, email@example.com, by 25th September 2019. Please direct any questions about the role to this address.
