Job location (usual place of work): Abingdon

Pay rate: From £8.50-£12 per hour

Pay is pro rata?: No

Job title: Science Instructor

Applications close on date: Ongoing

Hours are: Part time

Contract is: Temporary

Job description: On weekdays during term time, an instructor’s main duty will be to present and deliver fun science after school clubs which run for one hour with approximately 15-20 children aged between 4 and 11 yrs. Your responsibilities will also include being at the school with plenty of time to set up and clearing away the classroom/hall to the original state after the club has finished. After school clubs take place between the hours of 2-5pm, depending on the school.

During holiday camps, an instructor will support the lead presenter with the organisation of the science activities and supervise the children, ensuring a 1:10 ratio of adult to children is kept. We often have up to 40 children attending a holiday camp and will therefore require 1 lead and 4 assistant instructors at a minimum. The camp day format is like a school day from 9am to 3.30pm, with morning break and an hour for lunch. You will be required to arrive at the venue by 8.30am to help set up the facilities, supervise the children during lunch and help tidy up at the end of the day.

As an instructor you will be expected to travel to the host schools or venues in your local area. A driving licence and access to a reliable car is desirable. Although if you are a confident user of public transport, most primary schools are serviced well by buses and trains so travel can be easily accomplished this way.

Travel expenses, such as train and bus fares, will be reimbursed or if you are driving, mileage from your home to the venue will be paid for at a variable rate per mile, according to the distance travelled. You will also be required to travel to the main office in Abingdon, once a week to collect the appropriate kit.
