Job description: The Reading Advice Network (RAN) is a diverse group of voluntary organisations who give information and advice to people in need in Reading. It has its own Quality Standard and member organisations make a commitment to achieve and maintain this Standard. The Standard is written so that it can be used by member organisations as a self-assessment tool, but these self assessments need to be verified by independent assessment, for which the Network pays, from funding provided by Reading Borough Council. Member organisations are reassessed every four years.

The Network is committed to helping its members achieve the Quality Standard. The task of the independent assessor is to:
– Help member organisations to complete an initial self-assessment against the Standard, to identify the quality indicators that they currently meet, and those that they don’t
– Suggest ways in which they could change and improve their practice in those latter areas, drawing on the work of other member organisations who have achieved the Standard
– Carry out a formal assessment against the Standard, once the member organisation believes it has made the necessary improvements, and report the outcome to the Network’s Trustee Board.

Assessments and reassessments have been suspended since March 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but are expected to resume in the next few months. The work is intermittent, but the independent assessor could spend up to 12 days a year working with member organisations on assessments. The Network has no employees or offices, so the assessor will be self-employed and work from home. The daily payment rate will be agreed between the Network and the successful applicant.
