JOB VACANCY: Pets As Therapy – Digital Marketing & Engagement Officer

January 11, 2022

Role summary: Who are you
You have a passion for all things digital, are self-motivated and keen to get stuck in. You are confident in taking ownership of projects, coming up with new ideas, and you always pay meticulous attention to detail. You also excel at producing engaging content and storytelling across multiple digital channels.

You will be an integral part of the Head Office team. Working on digital campaigns and initiatives, you will be comfortable in a stand-alone post, taking on the role of internal expert on all things digital.

You are enthusiastic and energetic, proactive and driven and are eager to flourish in a small-team, hands-on environment.

This is an exciting new role to create and drive our digital strategy, ensuring it generates impact and expands the reach of Pets As Therapy. You already have experience in digital marketing and are looking for a role where you can make a difference.

Who are Pets As Therapy
Pets As Therapy (PAT) is a national charity founded in 1983 by Lesley Scott-Ordish, a passionate volunteer and dog lover. Lesley’s life’s work was investigating and writing about the bond between humans and animals. She founded Pro Dogs in 1976 and went on to start PAT after witnessing the deep levels of trauma experienced by the elderly, entering long-term care and being forced to give up their much-loved pets.
Volunteer visits to help alleviate isolation remain a cornerstone of PAT’s work today.

Pets As Therapy volunteers are dedicated pet owners who give up their spare time to help others. Along with their dog or cat, volunteers visit all types of establishments including residential care homes, hospitals, hospices and both special needs and mainstream schools.

Our volunteers and their pets bring comfort and companionship to people living in residential care who may feel isolated, confused and lonely. We support schools to help young people improve their literacy skills and encourage confidence and concentration in the classroom. Our hospital visits can aid a patient’s recovery and rehabilitation and help improve mental health and wellbeing.

We are developing our support for organisations who are delivering mental health awareness programmes, supporting people living with mental health challenges and organisations providing staff wellbeing initiatives.

In a typical year around 1 million people will be impacted by PAT team visits.

Therapeutic pet visits have been proven to make a significant, long-term difference to the lives of people with myriad, often hard to define problems. What’s more, conservative measures indicate that pet ownership in the UK saves the NHS £2.45bn per year. Those who share a home with a dog or cat make 15% fewer visits to their GP, and often live longer, happier lives – volunteers tell us they also benefit from visits. So much more can be done to harness the power of companion animals to change lives for the better.

Launched in October 2021, our new vision statement encapsulates what we do, “our pets and people enriching lives, one visit at a time”.
