Job description: About Oxfordshire Discovery College
We’re a small youth mental health charity with big ideas, drawing from the international Discovery College model to create something new and innovative. We support children and young people with their mental health and wellbeing by helping them to learn about what’s happening to them, share experiences, and develop skills and tools to stay well, and we support the adults around them to better understand too. We’re all about peer learning – nothing clinical, no talking therapies, just exploring and finding ways to manage together. All of our programmes are co-produced – this means that they’re designed and delivered by both people with professional expertise and people with lived experience of mental health problems or of being a carer.
At this crucial and exciting time, you’ll have a real opportunity to shape our direction and our way of working moving forward. We’ve secured funding to appoint two staff to pilot two brand new programmes. These staff will co-design and deliver two new lived experience-informed mental health programmes for children and young people. One will be targeted at 10-11 year olds and explore ways to maintain wellbeing through sport while dealing with change. The other will be for 16-19 year olds who are coping with Anxiety, with part of this programme being delivered online before moving the group to in-person sessions. Once designed, you’ll deliver each programme once as a pilot and evaluate their impact. As one of the two staff working on the project you will be jointly responsible for researching and writing programme content, developing programmes that are interactive, age appropriate and up-to-date, recruiting participants, devliering sessions, and compiling evaluation data.
We’re at a pivotal time in our growth as an organisation and these roles play a crucial role in steering our development moving forward – if you want to innovate and create change, this is the place to be!
o Collaborate with your co-facilitator to coproduce the two programmes, exploring the core topics and introducing current theory, signposting and self-help skills.
o Develop session plans, visuals, and any other necessary materials or learning resources.
o Monitor spending and ensure the project remains within budget.
o Deliver each of the two new multi-session programmes once before the end of July 2022, co-facilitating all sessions, at times convenient to each group (expected evenings and weekends).
o Work with local partners to recruit participants, ensure group needs are met, and student support runs smoothly.
o Implement our evaluation process to gather impact data and feedback to meet reporting requirements and inform future development.
o Where appropriate and comfortable, to share parts of your own lived experience and recovery journey.
o Work closely with the CEO to ensure that the project is delivered in line with funder’s expectations and the Discovery College model and vision.
o Adhere to and work within relevant policies, processes and procedures of Oxfordshire Discovery College.
o Uphold the values and ethos of the Discovery College in all aspects of the work.
We’re looking for two Programme Facilitators who can work closely together to draw upon a combination of lived experience and professional expertise. The Expert-by-Experience staff member will have lived experience of youth mental health problems and self harm, either as a parent/carer for a young person or your own lived experience as a child/teenager. The Expert-by-Training staff member will have professional expertise in a relevant field such as youth work, clinical, or therapeutic work. Our dream-team will be passionate about empowering young people, knowledgeable about mental health and self harm, and will be able to think creatively and collaborate well in a short space of time.
o Good understanding and knowledge of mental health and wellbeing in young people
o Lived experience of youth mental health problems, as outlined above (Expert-by-Experience Only)
o Professional expertise in a relevant field, eg: teaching, sports coaching, counselling (Expert-by-Training Only)
o Relevant qualifications (eg: clinical psychology, counselling, youth work, sports coaching, teaching) (Expert-by-Training Only)
o Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and listening skills
o Ability to be assertive and co-facilitate a small group of young people
o Commitment to principles of recovery and wellbeing
o Ability to model maintenance of wellbeing
o Good computer literacy
o Ability to work under own initiative and manage your workload
o Strong attention to detail
o Ability to think creatively
o Teamwork skills, and willingness to work collaboratively, to coproduce and co-deliver programme content
o Experience of working directly with children with mental health problems in a non-clinical or therapeutic setting, in a paid or voluntary capacity
o Understanding of child and adult safeguarding
o Experience of learning creation for young people
o Experience of evaluating impact, and collecting and processing feedback
o Skills or qualifications in sport
o First Aid qualification
