Age UK Oxfordshire – You could brighten local older people’s lives this winter.

Independent local charity Age UK Oxfordshire is putting a call out for volunteers for its telephone befriending service, Phone Friends.

We can all feel lonely sometimes, but prolonged and/or intense experiences of loneliness can have negative impacts on both our physical and mental health. Loneliness can increase the risk of early mortality by 26%, increase risk of poor mental health and is associated with elevated blood pressure and acute stress responses*.

With 1 in 5 older people in Oxfordshire reporting feeling lonely** and as we move into winter with colder and shorter days heightening feelings of loneliness and isolation, Age UK Oxfordshire’s Phone Friends service is needed more than ever.

Currently over 375 people receive a free, weekly telephone call from their friendly Phone Friend, but there are thousands more older people who could benefit from the service.

Volunteer telephone befrienders really brighten the lives of older people feeling lonely or isolated. An older person recently supported said, “It’s just what I needed to help stop me from feeling lonely.” and other said of their Phone Friend, “You always lift my spirits”.

Volunteering as a Phone Friend requires a minimum commitment of 1 hour per week which enables you to call up to 3 people and can be at a regular time that suits you. Calls can be made from the comfort of your own home and any expenses for call costs are covered.

If you’re friendly and feel comfortable talking whilst also providing a listening ear, you could bring comfort and friendship to local older people this winter. To register your interest in supporting Age UK Oxfordshire’s campaign to reduce loneliness amongst local older people, please call 01295 234 850 or email phonefriends@ageukoxfordshire.org.uk or visit www.ageuk.org.uk/oxfordshire for more information.

* www.campaigntoendloneliness.org

*23% of those 50-64 and 19% of those 75+ report feeling lonely sometimes or always (Oxfordshire data from 2021 Census).

Oxford Wood Recycling – need more volunteers

Join a vibrant team to make a positive difference for individuals and care for our environment.

We are looking for more volunteers to help us achieve all our ambitions.

There’s a specific call out for those with woodworking skills and who love supporting people into employment.

As a one-off, an electrician that could salvage some brass downlighters from an Oxford library would be very welcome so that we can make them available for sale.

And generally, anyone with some DIY skills that could give up a few hours, ideally regularly each week, would be very welcome. This time could be spent tidying up, putting wood away, de-nailing wood, cutting whisky barrels in half, a bit of sanding … there’s always something very helpful to do with a very friendly team to help.

Be Free Young Carers – seeking two new Trustees

Be Free Young Carers (BFYC) currently operates across South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse Districts. We offer support and advice dedicated to improving the lives and well-being of young carers.

BFYC is the only specialist charity supporting young carers in Oxfordshire. We provide advice and guidance, offer befriending and peer support, enabling young carers to meet socialise and have fun, increasing their self-confidence and improving their mental well-being.

In the post pandemic period, like many charities in Oxfordshire, BFYC has seen an increase in demand. It is also clear that a significant unmet need to support young carers exists across the county. We have a strategy to expand the geographical remit of young carers we can support, moving into Oxford in 2022 and the surrounding area, but retaining a focus on
Southern Oxfordshire. Our strategy will result in young carers across Oxfordshire receiving vital support they urgently need.

We are currently seeking two trustees:
– one who has experience/qualifications in the finance profession – accountancy experience desirable;
– one who has experience/ qualifications within the legal profession.
We are keen to see applications from across Oxfordshire and a diverse range of backgrounds.

We are looking for individuals with a financial accounting and legal background to join the Board and support our dedicated, growing, professional and highly motivated BFYC team. This is an exciting time to join a small but thriving, growing charity and a rare opportunity to
contribute to meeting the needs of Young Carers across Oxfordshire.

Oxfordshire Breastfeeding Support – Language Line Interpretation

Thanks to a generous award from the National Lottery Community Fund we are now able to offer the Language Line interpretation service at our drop-in breastfeeding support sessions in Oxford city (5 locations) and Didcot. This is part of our drive to serve all families in Oxfordshire, including those who face barriers to accessing traditional services.

We can now access interpretation in over 200 languages, via telephone.  BSL (sign language) interpretation via mobile phone or tablet is also available. If the language you need is not on the list, it may still be available – in this case, it would be helpful if families could contact us in advance of their visit, so we can find out.

Unfortunately, our Jericho venue doesn’t have mobile phone reception.  We can still access telephone interpretation there via landline (thanks to the support of the Health Visiting team) but we won’t be able to offer BSL interpretation at that venue.

We hope that Language Line will enable more families to find breastfeeding help and a supportive community at OBS.  Please tell your non-English speaking families about this new service, and pass on the message to other organisations who may be working with these families – we need your help to spread the word!

If you’re not familiar with the services our charity provides, you can find out more from our website. OBS serves all families, with many different kinds of feeding journeys. You are welcome to sign up to our OBS Professionals mailing list to receive news and updates from our project.

You can read about what to expect at a drop-in session and find stories from some of our service users here and find us on Facebook.  We also offer a private, women-only Facebook group for 24/7 breastfeeding support from other mothers (currently 1600+ members from across Oxfordshire), closely moderated by our specialist team.

If there is anything that we can do to support the families you work with, we would be delighted to hear from you.  Professional and voluntary supporters are always welcome to accompany families to our sessions, and to contact us about any families who would benefit from our service but are not able to access it.  If you have any ideas about how we might work together to reach more families, we’d love to talk.

Wolvercote Young People’s Club – daytime tenant needed

Our long-term daytime tenant is leaving and this fabulous space in St Peter’s Road, Wolvercote, OX2 8AU is now available for a sub-tenancy between the hours of 8.00 – 4.30 weekdays. (The county council is our landlord.)

The building would suit a charity, sports club or not-for-profit running day time activities or classes for your clients. You would get a fully serviced building with lovely grounds, including a sports ‘cage’, car parking, equipped kitchen, small office (two workstations), sports hall, meeting room, which could provide further office space, and chill-out areas. See photos and further details of the space and rooms on our website: www.wolvercoteypc.org.uk

Our preference is to negotiate terms with an organisation wanting full daytime occupancy but we would consider long-term hire of individual spaces within the building.
Interested? Write to hello@wolvercoteypc.org.uk and we will be in touch.
