Introduction to Microsoft Excel

This course is suitable for complete beginners to Microsoft Excel and those with limited experience. 

We will walk you through the basic elements of Excel and there will be plenty of time to practice your new knowledge and ask questions.  

This interactive and practical course introduces beginners to the software and explains how it can be used to enhance your work.

This course is ideal for learners and refreshers as it covers all the basic elements of Excel in a practical, hand on format, allowing you time to practice the techniques in the session. By the end of the course, learners will be able to format a spreadsheet for printing, create charts, use basic functions effectively and start to analyse data.

This training will be in person at OCVA. 

What will I learn?

By the end of this session you will be able to

  • Have a good working knowledge of Excel basics
  • Open and navigate workbooks
  • Enter and edit labels and values
  • Modify your worksheet: move and copy data, insert and delete ranges, format rows and columns
  • Merge cells, format text and justify data to be able to create tables that look how you want them to
  • Use built-in templates, Format Painter and AutoFormat
  • Understand and be able to build simple calculations and formulae
  • Know how to use Freeze Panes and hide data
  • Prepare to print using setup options, page break previews and print multiple sheets.

Trainer details

Gary Gibbs has had a varied career and is an experienced trainer, having trained people in health and safety, databases, consumer driven product development and food science.

Gary started his career as a research and development scientist using excel extensively for data analysis and reporting.

Having later moved into the food industry he used excel for business analysis combining large data sets to do commercial analysis on how the company’s products were performing in the marketplace.

Most recently he has created spreadsheet to mail merge invoices, track projects and imported research questionnaires into online applications for use in clinical trials.

He loves a spreadsheet!

9.45 am arrival for tea, coffee and networking for a 10.00 am start. The workshop will finish by 1.00 pm. There will be a short break halfway during the session.

  • £35 per person for OCVA Members
  • £50 per person from a charitable organisation who are not OCVA members
