Overview

An essential session for those responsible for managing volunteers. This intermediate level course will help you to clarify the legal position in relation to volunteers.

How do you ensure you are supporting and developing volunteers while avoiding the risk of creating contracts and falling foul of employment law? In the session, we will look at some useful Case Law and discuss them in detail.

This course will enable you to understand volunteering and the law in relation to employment law, your duty of care, safeguarding, health and safety, equality and diversity, insurance, and employment benefits.

This proactive workshop, designed to breakdown the complexitites of these regulations and leave you feeling reassured in your responsibilites and management of volunteers

What will I learn?

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Be able to explain the difference between an employment contract and a volunteer agreement
  • Have an understanding of your duty of care and be aware of other legislation that may affect your relationship with volunteers such as health & safety, safeguarding, GDPR etc
  • Know the difference between a volunteer and an employee
  • Have an awareness of other regulations that you may need to consider when recruiting & managing volunteers

Trainer Profile

Tariq Khandoker is the Development Officer / Volunteer Centre Coordinator at OCVA. He has previously worked in the North of England with a number of charities and social enterprises over a 15-year period. First as a Funding Officer and then as a Development Officer (on governance issues) and eventually as an Operations Manager with an infrastructure organisation and subsequently with a social enterprise. In his current role at OCVA, he works to raise the profile of volunteering and helps organisations to achieve their outcomes through the recruitment, placement and retention of volunteers. This involves helping organisations promote their work and their volunteering opportunities through print and electronic media as well as managing Oxfordshire’s premier volunteering brokerage site “oxonvolunteers.org”. He also actively engages with prospective volunteers, helping them to build their confidence and skill set in order to secure their ideal volunteering role.

  • £55 per person from a charitable organisation who are not OCVA members
  • £70 per person from a non-charitable organisation
