Volunteering Good Practice and the Law

An essential session for those responsible for managing volunteers.

This informative and engaging workshop will highlight the key areas to be aware of regarding legal issues, good practice in volunteering and tips to make sure you are adhering to your responsibilities in protecting volunteer’s rights.

This course is a basic introduction to volunteering and the law. The session will help you to clarify the legal position in relation to volunteers. How do you ensure that you are supporting and developing volunteers while avoiding the risk of creating contracts and falling foul of employment law?

OCVA’s Volunteering Development Officer will use practical exercises, real life examples and current advice to guide you through what is good practice in volunteering and how this relates to the law. There will be useful tips provided on developing an agreement that reflects the role and the volunteer’s responsibilities, without creating a contract. You will also have an opportunity to enhance your knowledge of best practice in managing volunteers to achieve these guidelines.

This is a pro-active workshop, designed to break down the complexities of these regulations and leave you feeling reassured in your responsibilities and management of volunteers.

The course will be run in person at our OCVA training room ‘The Source’.

What will I learn?

By the end of this session you will be able to:

    • Be able to define what volunteering is
    • Know the difference between a volunteer and an employee
    • Have a clearer understanding of volunteer’s rights
    • Know the difference between a contract versus an agreement
    • Be confident in volunteering good practice

Trainer profile

Jenny Bowley is OCVA’s Volunteer Development Officer. She has spent the last twenty years in Youth and Community work, working in education, local council, social housing and health. Her roles as Community Youth Officer and Community Development Officer have extended her knowledge of the VCS sector and she has had a variety of voluntary roles to give her first-hand experience of volunteering. In her current role at OCVA, she works to raise the profile of volunteering and helps organisations to achieve their outcomes through the recruitment, placement and retention of volunteers.
