OCVA Members’ Spotlight: Sunrise Multicultural Project CIO

Serving the diverse communities of Banbury and its surrounding areas, Sunrise Multicultural Project CIO is making an extraordinary impact on the lives of families from minoritised communities. This small but dynamic charity has established itself as more than just a service provider – it has become a cornerstone of community support.

The charity’s mission encompasses three vital areas: educational advancement through various programmes, health promotion via dedicated support services, and the provision of recreational facilities that enhance quality of life. But what truly sets Sunrise apart is their deeply personal approach to community service.

Operating across multiple locations in Banbury, the charity runs regular programmes designed to meet local community needs. Sunrise’s women’s groups meet weekly at different venues, offering practical activities including cookery classes, yoga sessions, and craft workshops. These sessions help participants develop new skills while building social connections.

The charity’s commitment to youth development is equally impressive. Every week, young people gather for dedicated youth groups at various locations across Banbury. Sunday evenings come alive with the sound of football, whilst Saturday clubs buzz with energy and creativity. As one 11-year-old attendee shares, “They have baby classes. I joined them when I was three, and I’ve been coming ever since. It’s made me really confident and not to be scared about standing up and talking.” Another young participant adds, “If I wasn’t here on a Saturday, I would be sat at home watching TV and doing nothing. I enjoy playing pool, football, and being creative.”

Understanding the diverse needs of their community, Sunrise operates from multiple locations throughout Banbury, including their main office and community space on the outskirts of town, along with additional facilities in the town centre. This strategic placement ensures their services remain accessible to all segments of the community they serve.

Particularly noteworthy is Sunrise’s partnership with Citizens Advice Banbury, providing free information and advice to those who need it. The charity also offers specialised support through their Independent Domestic Violence Advisor, who provides culturally sensitive assistance to women from BAME communities – a service that demonstrates Sunrise’s deep understanding of the challenges faced by their community members.

While Sunrise focuses primarily on supporting ethnic minority families in Banbury, particularly those of Pakistani descent, their services are open to all. Single-parent families and those on low incomes from various wards in Banbury regularly access their support, and English families participate in activities, contributing to community integration.

The organisation maintains a strong focus on cultural awareness and integration. Through workshops and projects, they help develop parents’ English language skills and confidence. Sunrise’s work with other local charities and community projects addresses cultural issues affecting family life and community integration.

New participants are welcome to join any of Sunrise’s groups and activities. The charity demonstrates how targeted local support can effectively serve diverse community needs and promote social inclusion.
