The Oxfordshire National Pensioners Convention (NPC) Group works to improve the lives of older people across the county and beyond. The local Group is one of many such groups throughout the UK. NPC works in cooperation with many bodies with similar aims. A recent example of their work was an NPC Lobby of Parliament, where the group joined forces with MPs, charities, trade unions, and people of all ages. They were protesting at cuts to the universal Winter Fuel Payment. This showcased the broad appeal of their cause and underscored the urgent need to protect the financial stability of pensioners. The Oxfordshire NPC Group continues to fight for a decent State Pension and adequate financial support, ensuring that retirees can live with dignity and security.
Another critical area of focus is the call for a proper National Social Care Service. With the growing demand for accessible and comprehensive care, NPC recognises the need for a system that ensures older adults receive the support they require. Their advocacy extends to improving the NHS. They understand that a well-funded healthcare system is vital for the wellbeing of all generations.
Beyond healthcare and financial security, the group is actively campaigning for improvements in local infrastructure to create safer, more inclusive environments for seniors. They push for age-friendly urban planning and safer streets, including tackling dangers posed by e-scooters, cycles and e-bikes in pedestrian spaces. NPC promote housing that meets the needs of seniors, alongside better public transport options, recognising that mobility and accessibility are key to maintaining independence and social connections as people age.
As part of the larger National Pensioners Convention, the Oxfordshire group contributes to national rallies, parliamentary lobbying, and policy submissions. John Paine emphasised the importance of ongoing engagement with local councillors and MPs to promote key issues affecting pensioners.
