Volunteer Centre West Berkshire: Courses for those setting up a group

September 14, 2026

The Volunteer Centre West Berkshire is running two courses aimed at supporting those setting up a group.

Starting a Group for Good

This is part one of a two-part series looking at good governance, operation and management of a “group for good”.

Such “groups for good” include:
• a local community group
• a self-help group
• a “steering group” for an idea or group that expects to grow bigger
• a Registered Charity
• a social enterprise or community business

This 2 hour online course is designed for anyone interested in setting up “groups for good” or assisting others to do so.

It is suitable for those who think they may have an idea, or those who are already forming such a group. Although it is based on charity and company laws, very little legal jargon is used, and all is clearly explained.

Running a Group for Good

This 2 hour online course is aimed at people who have already started to set up their “group for good”, or who are imminently starting. This includes Trustees/Committee Members/ Directors, as well as volunteers and employees with such groups.

It offers practical advice for those who are actually, or soon will be, running their group, and although touches on financial, legal and policy areas, all jargon used is explained.

This is part two of a two-part series looking at good governance, operation and management of a “group for good” (the 1st part is “Starting a group for good”), and primarily covers Charitable Incorporated Organisations and Community Interest Companies.

It details six areas to examine:
• Governing and managing
• Meeting
• Financing
• Policies
• Operating
• Reporting

Although attendees on this course would benefit from having undertaken the first part, this course is standalone.
