Employee Volunteering

What is employee volunteering?

Corporate or employee volunteering means taking part in an activity or service whilst you are employed, either as part of your employment package or as a team event.

How do I spend my allocated volunteering days?

It is important to understand from your employer what your entitlement is and how you can use this. The average is 1-5 days and some employers will allow you to split this into hours. For example, 5 days can become 10 mornings. Contact the group you are interested in and ask if they are taking volunteers. In Oxfordshire we have Oxon Volunteers where organisations advertise their volunteering roles (just like you would for a job).

What if we want to volunteer as a group?

Many organisations will be happy to take a group of volunteers for one day, however this can generate a lot of work which they may not be able to manage. It is important to be clear how many people are coming, if you have any specific requirements and if you can contribute financially to the day.

What happens next?

Volunteering is a mutual agreement. It’s important that you are able to best help and support the non-profit you are collaborating with. Maybe you have a specific skill or some resources that they need?

And finally – have a great time! Volunteering is fun and can help with team building skills.
