OCVA Members’ Spotlight – The Archway Foundation

September 2, 2024

Loneliness and social isolation are widespread issues affecting millions across the UK, with significant impacts on both mental and physical health. In Oxfordshire, the Archway Foundation has been a key player in addressing these challenges since it was founded in 1982 by Paul Hawgood.

The Archway Foundation is open to anyone over the age of 18 who identifies as lonely or isolated, regardless of their background, religion, or personal circumstances. The organisation provides a range of services designed to offer meaningful social contact, helping to foster well-being and reduce the harmful effects of loneliness.

The foundation is supported by a small staff team, a dedicated Board of Trustees, and more than 80 committed volunteers. Together, they ensure that everyone who engages with Archway is treated with compassion, respect, and non-judgmental acceptance. Whether someone is referred by a professional or decides to seek help on their own, Archway is there to walk alongside them, providing the support needed to improve their well-being.

Archway offers individual support through both telephone and face-to-face services. The Telephone Support Service pairs a “Friend” (someone who uses Archway’s services) with a volunteer who provides social contact through regular phone calls. These calls offer consistent support and vary in length depending on what the Friend needs at the time.

For those who prefer or require in-person interaction, Archway connects Friends with volunteers who meet them outside their homes for a coffee or a walk. If necessary, volunteers visit Friends at home, particularly if they are unable to leave due to health reasons. This service is vital for those who struggle to get out, ensuring they still have access to social contact.

In addition to one-on-one support, Archway runs social groups in Oxford and Abingdon, providing a monthly opportunity for Friends to meet in a safe and welcoming environment. These groups are a space where individuals can build confidence, form new friendships, and reconnect with their local communities.

The support offered by Archway can be life changing. Henny, a Friend of Archway, speaks about her experience with the foundation. After being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and dealing with her husband’s prolonged hospitalisation, she found herself isolated and in need of support. Polly, a volunteer she met through Archway, became a vital source of companionship. “I was glad that Polly was there to talk, because there was nobody else around” Henny says, reflecting on how essential this relationship has been during difficult times.

Another Friend, Chris, shares a similar story. After returning to the UK and facing homelessness due to health problems, Chris found a community with Archway. He highlights the consistency and support he receives through both the social groups and regular telephone calls. “It means you’re still in touch with the world,” Chris notes, emphasising how important these connections are for his well-being.

Archway’s ability to provide these services relies heavily on its volunteers, who are the backbone of the organisation. Volunteers receive comprehensive training and ongoing support, with travel expenses covered. As the demand for Archway’s services continues to grow, the need for more volunteers is greater than ever.

Loneliness remains one of the most significant challenges facing society today. Archway’s work is a testament to the difference that compassionate, consistent support can make in the lives of those affected by isolation. As volunteer Polly Henny powerfully puts it, “I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t volunteer for Archway. Loneliness is one of the biggest blights in our society today, and it’s something we can all help to address.”

For over four decades, the Archway Foundation has been tackling loneliness one conversation at a time, offering a beacon of hope for those in need. As they continue to expand their reach and services, the need for community support—both in terms of volunteers and awareness—has never been more critical.
