Eating well is one of the most important things we can do for our health, but for many people, access to affordable, nutritious food is limited. Barriers to accessing healthy food contribute towards health inequalities and can increase the likelihood of preventable illness.
Supporting healthy eating through Well Together
Food has always been an important part of community activities, and many groups provide and promote healthy and delicious food and snacks. Here are a few projects that Well Together has funded and supported.
Children learn about healthy cooking from the chef at
Rose Hill Junior Youth Club.
“We teach them to cook from scratch, using fresh ingredients. These are skills for life –
a healthier life!”
Rice and pea pilaf, and raita with cucumber swirls from Sunrise Multicultural Project in Banbury.
“We receive lovely food from the food bank, different each week. I have learned many new things from the other women, and I try out some of their ideas at home.”
Fresh fruit and vegetables at the Rose Hill Community Larder, plus some recipe ideas.
“I eat much healthier since I came here. I learned to make a curry and now I make it all the time, you can add any vegetable you want to!”
Waste To Taste, Oxford is a community café and catering service, committed to reducing food waste.
As one customer said: “Have you tried it?
They can make any food taste tasty!”
Children loved having a choice of the coloured chopped peppers and cucumber snacks at Dovecote Centre at Blackbird Leys.
“Which one are you going to have?
I’m going to have the yellow pepper.”
