Established in 2018, Oxfordshire Asian Women’s Voice (OAWV) has played a vital role in supporting Asian women across the county, addressing issues of social isolation, oppression, depression, and domestic violence.
Speaking to Sabeena, the Chair and Founder of OAWV, she shares that the group was born out of a desire to create a safe, supportive space for Asian women in Oxfordshire. With voluntary experience across several organisations supporting families, she brings both passion and insight to her leadership. Her commitment continues to shape the group’s dynamic and inclusive approach.
Activities to foster inclusion
The organisation runs a diverse programme of events, workshops, and activities aimed at promoting education, health, wellbeing, and social integration, while advocating for gender equality, diversity, and inclusion within the community.
Through initiatives like their community kitchen, women come together to cook and share meals, fostering a strong sense of unity, collaboration, and friendship that extends far beyond the kitchen. The walking group offers planned trails that not only promote physical wellbeing but also give participants a genuine sense of achievement as they explore local landscapes together.
Practical skill-building is another focus, with first aid training sessions helping women build confidence and develop potentially life-saving abilities. Recently, in collaboration with partner organisations, OAWV hosted a powerful event where women gathered to discuss healthy relationships in a safe and supportive environment — once again sharing meals as a way to connect across cultures.
OAWV also celebrates important cultural occasions. A recent Eid celebration brought the community together for food, laughter, and connection, reinforcing cultural identity while building new bonds.
Welcoming further support
OAWV welcomes support from the wider community whether that’s through volunteering, donations, or simply spreading the word about their vital work.
By creating these supportive spaces and activities, Oxfordshire Asian Women’s Voice continues to build strength, resilience, and community among Asian women across the county. This demonstrates how culturally sensitive approaches can effectively address complex social challenges.
OAWV members meet every Wednesday from 12.30pm – 2.30pm at Rose Hill Community Centre. To find out more, email Oxfordshire Asian Women’s Voice, view their profile on Live Well Oxfordshire, or follow their Facebook page.
