Nature, community and hope — growing side by side
Tucked away on a peaceful organic farm near Watchfield – just 20 minutes from Witney – Root & Branch offers something truly special. This small charity supports adults on their mental health recovery journeys through nature-based, therapeutic activities.
Partly funded by the NHS Oxfordshire Mental Health Partnership via Restore, Root & Branch offers a unique three-year programme for adults experiencing moderate to severe or long-term mental health challenges.
What sets them apart is their environment. Participants are welcomed into a working garden, craft room, wood workshop, kitchen, gym, and above all, a warm and supportive community. At the heart of Root & Branch is the belief that healing can happen through connection with nature, creativity, and others. Participants work alongside skilled staff and volunteers to develop strategies that support their wellbeing. In the final months of their programme, they’re guided by a dedicated Skills and Development Mentor to take confident steps into life beyond the centre.
A Spring in Full Bloom
Earlier this year, the team prepared for their Annual Plant Fair, a vibrant event that brought the garden to life. With flowers, herbs, and grasses grown by participants and volunteers, plus beautiful handmade crafts and woodwork on offer, the day was a great success. The garden buzzed with friendly competitions like Guess the Weight of the Cake, while others simply enjoyed the sunshine, tea and homemade treats. Events like these are key fundraisers and only possible thanks to the dedication of volunteers.
Looking Ahead
The months ahead look just as exciting. From new yoga sessions and glass art workshops to forging connections with other horticultural charities, the Root & Branch calendar is as full as the garden beds – now bursting with fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs. These will be turned into hearty, vegetarian lunches by the kitchen team, bringing everyone together around the table.
Celebrating Volunteers
During National Volunteers Week, Root & Branch took time to honour the incredible people who make everything possible. Participants created a heartfelt display of words describing their volunteers, who also received handwritten cards and packets of flower seeds gathered from the garden. Each session ended with tea and cake served by staff. A small gesture to say a big thank you.
