Flo’s – The Place in the Park: Where Community Grows
Tucked away in the heart of Florence Park, Flo’s – The Place in the Park is more than a café, shop, or nursery. It’s a vibrant social enterprise where community-led action meets practical support, warmth, and inclusion.
Since opening, Flo’s has quietly become one of Oxford’s most dynamic community hubs. It brings together people of all ages and backgrounds through simple but powerful principles: share space, break bread, and support each other.

Where Every Coffee Counts
At its core, Flo’s runs as a cooperative social enterprise. The café is open seven days a week, serving hearty brunches, nourishing soups, and fresh pastries from 9am to 6pm. But unlike most cafés, every purchase directly funds a network of community care initiatives: free meals, employment and training opportunities, and health equity projects for local families.
Each Monday, Flo’s offers a Community Meal, where anything on the menu can be accessed on a pay-as-you-can basis. The same ethos runs through the daily Me & You Menu, where customers can donate meals in advance for others to enjoy discreetly, using a simple token system at the counter. It’s food access with dignity at its heart.
Sustainability for Everyone
Next door, Flo’s Refill Shop is a plastic-free treasure trove. Open Tuesday to Saturday, it stocks everything from cereals and spices to handmade soaps and gifts – all with minimal packaging. It’s a practical and accessible way for residents to reduce waste and support local producers.
Meanwhile, Flo’s Hatch – open weekends by the tennis courts – offers a quieter spot for parkgoers to grab coffee, ice cream or a smoothie on the go.
Early Years, Nature and Nurture
For families, Flo’s is a lifeline. The Nature Nursery provides early years care for children aged 2–4 in a calming, home-from-home environment that centres nature-based learning. Weekly Stay and Play sessions offer a free, welcoming space for parents and toddlers to connect, while Nature Explorers helps children learn about the natural world through games, crafts and storytelling.
On Fridays, Parent and Baby Yoga offers new parents gentle movement and mental health support, free of charge.
Growing Community from the Ground Up
Flo’s understands that connection doesn’t stop in early childhood. Their Walk, Talk and Tea group meets every Friday afternoon for accessible walks and post-walk cake.
Gardening groups run twice weekly, giving residents a chance to dig in, get outdoors, and care for the green spaces that make Florence Park special.
For older neighbours, Welcome Wednesday offers a free monthly lunch for over-65s, combining good food with vital social time in a relaxed, welcoming setting.
Evenings that Spark Joy
Flo’s keeps its doors open after dark too. First Friday community events bring families together for food, themed activities, and pizza-making. Awkward Actors Comedy Nights, held monthly, offer unscripted laughs from local performers with entry offered on a pay-as-you-feel basis, so cost isn’t a barrier to joy.
Championing Equal Starts in OX4
Flo’s also leads the Equal Start Oxford project, tackling the significant health inequalities faced by Black and minoritised women and birthing people. From antenatal education and advocacy to translation services and peer support, the programme focuses on improving outcomes in the critical first 1,000 days of life – a time when too many families in OX4 struggle to access culturally sensitive and consistent care.
As a founding member of the OX4 Food Crew – a collaboration of nine grassroots groups – Flo’s works in partnership to address rising food insecurity, share resources, and support neighbours through a unified network.
A Model That Works
Flo’s is proof that local enterprise can power local care. Every coffee bought, refill made, or room booked helps fund free programmes for those most in need. It’s a model rooted not in charity, but in solidarity, in the belief that thriving communities come from mutual support, shared spaces, and simple acts of kindness.
Whether you’re sipping tea at a comedy night, digging into a curry on a Monday, or browsing for sustainable essentials you’re part of something bigger.
