WEMPOWERED CIC: Connection, wellbeing, and growth for mothers and families

In Blackbird Leys, a group of local mothers have created something wonderful: a community-led organisation dedicated to supporting women, children, and families through connection, wellbeing, and opportunities to grow. WEMPOWERED CIC was founded and is run by women from the area, giving it deep roots in the neighbourhoods it serves. Their programmes are shaped by lived experience, local voices, and an understanding of what families truly need to thrive.

Wempowered CIC

At the heart of WEMPOWERED’s work is a simple but powerful aim — to bring women together, reduce isolation, build confidence, and create safe, welcoming spaces where families can learn, socialise, and support one another.

A community approach to wellbeing

WEMPOWERED offers free women-only fitness sessions, giving mothers the chance to focus on their health while meeting others in a relaxed and supportive environment. Children can join nearby activities, helping make the sessions accessible for parents who often struggle to find time for themselves.

Their family brunches have become a regular point of connection, combining good food with conversation and a play area for children. These gatherings provide a relaxed way for families to meet, share experiences, and feel part of a wider community.

Growing together outdoors

The “Wild Flowers Allotment” is one of WEMPOWERED’s most cherished projects. A community allotment where families can garden, take part in creative outdoor activities, and spend time in nature. Many parents say this has supported their wellbeing as much as their children’s.

As volunteer Arjetta explains: “I am so happy to be near nature, and my kids are happy to learn and be away from screens. It has made me feel part of the community and improved my wellbeing.”

Building skills and confidence

WEMPOWERED also runs digital skills and youth-focused programmes. Oxford Girls Who Code introduces girls to programming. Starting with block coding and building toward Python, helping them develop problem-solving skills, teamwork, and confidence in STEM subjects.

The organisation also provides mentoring, wellbeing support, and skills training for mothers, encouraging personal growth and opening up new opportunities.

Led by the community, for the community

Director Marta, a local mother, describes the vision simply: “WEMPOWERED CIC is dedicated to empowering mothers and their children in Blackbird Leys and surrounding areas through three core pillars: Connection, Wellbeing, and Growth.”

From fitness and digital skills to gardening and family events, their approach creates spaces where women feel supported, children can explore and learn, and families can build lasting relationships.
