Recruiting and Retaining Volunteers

Overview

This interactive session will guide you through the world of volunteer recruitment. It will include practical suggestions, a toolkit to take away and plenty of opportunities to share ideas on how to recruit volunteers and keep hold of them!

Volunteer recruitment is a constant challenge for many organisations. This workshop will explore the volunteer journey and how your organisation can recruit. Equipped with this knowledge you will have the chance to critique current volunteer recruitment campaigns, consider different ways of working and learn about current developments in the sector in Oxfordshire and how OCVA can help.

There will be opportunities throughout the session to reflect on your current methods of recruitment and volunteer management. OCVA’s Volunteering Development Officer will offer her thoughts on how to retain volunteers based on professional experience and the findings of national research.

The course will be run in person at our OCVA training room allowing time to network and connect with others.

What will I learn?

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify what motivates people to start volunteering
  • Reflect on the volunteering opportunities currently offered by your organisation
  • Describe a range of methods for delivering a volunteer recruitment campaign
  • Identify the range of ways OCVA can help you to recruit and how to use Oxon Volunteers more effectively
  • Reflect on why volunteers leave your organisation
  • Identify strategies and approaches to aid volunteer retention.

Trainer Profile

Jenny Bowley is OCVA’s Volunteer Development Officer. She has spent the last twenty years in Youth and Community work, working in education, local council, social housing and health. Her roles as Community Youth Officer and Community Development Officer have extended her knowledge of the VCS sector and she has had a variety of voluntary roles to give her first-hand experience of volunteering. In her current role at OCVA, she works to raise the profile of volunteering and helps organisations to achieve their outcomes through the recruitment, placement and retention of volunteers. This involves helping organisations promote their work and their volunteering opportunities through print and electronic media as well as managing Oxfordshire’s premier volunteering brokerage site “oxonvolunteers.org”.
