Here at OCVA, we understand that winter can be a challenging time for mental well-being, and we recognise that nature can play a role in improving it, even though the cold weather can sometimes make it feel less inviting! That’s why we were thrilled to learn about the well-being event hosted at the Botanic Gardens, part of GLAM, one of our valued OCVA members.
I was delighted when I received an invitation to attend the Winter Wonders event at the Botanic Gardens. Last Tuesday, I joined the session centred around the charming winter flower, Snowdrops or Galanthus, I would later learn.
Led by the knowledgeable Wellbeing Outreach Officer, Rodger, the walking tour proved to be a delightful experience. As we strolled through the garden, Rodger told us about the fascinating history, science, and mythology surrounding these beautiful flowers, as well as guiding us to view and smell other delights of the gardens.
Even in the midst of winter, the Botanic Gardens continued to showcase their botanical wonders. The Wellbeing Outreach Officer offers weekly conducted spotlights, each highlighting a specific plant, feature, or area of the garden. These sessions run every Tuesday from January 16 to March 26 at 12:30 – 12:50, providing a perfect midday escape.
One visitor described the experience as “informative, enjoyable, and adding another dimension to the charming plants.” I couldn’t agree more. It was a unique opportunity to connect with nature in a meaningful way, learning and appreciating the beauty that winter brings to the botanical world.
