I recently had the pleasure to visit an OCVA member group OurBus Bartons, a community-driven initiative that has significantly impacted the local community since its establishment in 2016.
During my visit, I had the opportunity to meet with two key figures behind the operation, Ken and Martin.
OurBus Bartons originated as a response to the void created by public transport cuts, leaving the local community without viable transportation options. The organisation provides a scheduled weekday bus service, linking the Bartons and surrounding villages with essential hubs such as larger villages, health centres, and supermarkets.
Throughout my visit, I discovered that the service enables approximately 100 passenger journeys per week. The bus, entirely operated by volunteers, serves as a lifeline for older community members who may face challenges accessing public transportation due to age, sickness, disability, poverty, or the lack of available services.
A notable feature of OurBus Bartons is its commitment to inclusivity. The bus is equipped with a lift, ensuring that community members with disabilities have easy access. This small yet impactful modification shows the organisation’s dedication to serving everyone in the community.
The tour around the bus shed light on its vital role in alleviating elderly isolation. For some residents, the bus isn’t just a means of transportation; it’s an opportunity to connect with others and have a friendly conversation during their journey. This social aspect is invaluable, demonstrating that OurBus Bartons goes beyond being a mere transportation service—it is an integral part of the community’s social fabric. It’s a lifeline for those who might otherwise struggle with mobility, serving as a support system that encourages people to remain in the area due to the connection and assistance the service provides.
My visit to OurBus Bartons left me inspired and impressed by the dedication of the volunteers and the profound impact the organisation has on the lives of community members. It serves as a shining example of how a community-driven initiative can fill gaps, foster connections, and truly make a difference in people’s lives.
