OCVA Members’ Spotlight: The Valentine Club – A Lifeline for Seniors in Steeple Aston

May 9, 2024

Managing a seniors’ group comes with its challenges, especially when it comes to securing funding for essential operations. The Valentine Club, founded 70 years ago in Steeple Aston, knows this all too well. With a membership of over 100 individuals aged 60 and above, the club has thrived by prioritising quality entertainment and enriching experiences.

It will soon be meal time

Each month, The Valentine Club hosts engaging meetings featuring notable speakers and entertainers, creating a vibrant atmosphere for its members. Additionally, the club organises six to seven coach trips annually, offering opportunities for exploration and socialisation beyond the village borders. However, these endeavours require financial support, including venue hire, insurance, and speaker fees.

Gratefully, The Valentine Club has found support through organisations like OCVA, which have provided invaluable information on potential grant funding. Thanks to this assistance, the club has not only sustained its operations but has also flourished, welcoming new members and expanding its offerings.

The impact of The Valentine Club extends far beyond its activities. For many members, especially those who have lost partners, the club serves as a lifeline to a sense of normalcy and companionship. The annual Christmas dinner, attended by 94 members last year, is a cherished tradition filled with laughter, camaraderie, and high-quality entertainment.

Time for Lunch

The committee states that “seeing the smiling faces and receiving compliments from members as they leave each event is thanks enough”. The Valentine Club remains committed to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for seniors in Steeple Aston, ensuring that every member feels valued and connected.
