OCVA Members’ Spotlight: Oxford Neighbourhood Watch

June 11, 2024

At the heart of Oxford’s community safety efforts is Neighbourhood Watch, a volunteer-driven initiative aimed at reducing and preventing crime across the city’s neighbourhoods. The programme empowers residents to take an active role in safeguarding their communities by fostering a spirit of collaboration and vigilance.

Maggie Lewis is the Area Representative and Administrator for Oxford Neighbourhood Watch, a Committee Member of the Thames Valley Neighbourhood Watch Association, and a CyberWatch Ambassador for Oxford. Her passion for crime prevention led her to spearhead a research project in collaboration with Oxford University, meticulously studying bike theft patterns and collecting invaluable data in 2022.

The project’s findings inspired the creation of an informative leaflet and secured a crucial donation, enabling Oxford Neighbourhood Watch to continue the legacy of bike marking and registration services – a proven deterrent against the cycle of theft, and a way for the police to reunite cycles and owners.

Throughout the year, Maggie and her team organise numerous events across Oxford, setting up bike marking stations and Neighbourhood Watch stalls in parks, on campus grounds, outside shops, at markets, festivals, and community events. These initiatives not only provide a practical crime prevention service but also serve as a platform to promote Neighbourhood Watch membership and launch new local schemes.

Often, new members join after a crime has been committed, but Oxford Neighbourhood Watch strives to take a proactive approach, preventing crime before it occurs.

Residents can become members or start a new Neighbourhood Watch scheme as an approved Coordinator, working locally while benefiting from the national organisation’s resources and its 2.3 million-strong membership. Coordinators receive direct access to a designated Police Community Support Officer, facilitating the sharing of local intelligence and crime prevention advice.

Neighbourhood Watch schemes increase awareness about happenings in your area and ensure people look out for each other, especially older and vulnerable people. Schemes provide free window stickers, road signs, discounts on security goods, and free bike marking services (currently available in Oxford), empowering communities to take ownership of their safety.

Oxford Neighbourhood Watch exemplifies how community-driven initiatives can foster a sense of unity and empowerment in safeguarding neighbourhoods. As Maggie’s efforts demonstrate, a little vigilance and cooperation go a long way in creating safer, more resilient communities for all.
