OCVA Members’ Spotlight – Beautiful Minds Drama Club

February 24, 2025

Beautiful Minds Drama Club, run by Tracey Spokes, provides a welcoming space for neurodiverse and autistic adults to find their voice and build self-confidence through the power of drama.

Meeting every Monday afternoon from 12-1pm at The Source in Oxford (The Old Courthouse, Floyd’s Row, Oxford OX1 1SS), this innovative drama club uses theatrical techniques to help members express their feelings more confidently while creating meaningful connections with like-minded individuals.

“We provide a platform to encourage friendship and foster good relationships,” explains Tracey. The club’s approach centres on inclusivity and personal growth, embracing their motto: “Why fit the mould, when you can create it.”

Named after the Russell Crowe film ‘A Beautiful Mind’ – which tells the story of John Nash, an autistic college professor – the club embodies a deep appreciation for neurodiversity. The founders believe in “the beauty of autism theory,” recognising that “autism is not a mystery to be solved or a problem to be remedied; it is a vital component of the human experience, contributing to the richness of our collective tapestry.”

The group has already achieved remarkable success, with performances at Oxford’s Marmalade Festival last year and public plays that showcase members’ talents and creativity. Beautiful Minds welcomes adults aged 18-80, creating an intergenerational space where everyone can participate regardless of previous acting experience.

For £10 per session, members can join a supportive community focused on exploration, growth and fun. “We have exciting projects to be involved in,” Tracey adds, highlighting the ongoing opportunities available to members.

Beautiful Minds operates as part of a social enterprise theatre dedicated to raising awareness about learning disabilities through inclusive performances and workshops. Their philosophy resonates in everything they do: “By understanding and loving autism, we pave the road for a more inclusive and compassionate society that respects the intrinsic value of every individual, regardless of their neurocognitive peculiarities.”

New members are always welcome to join this fun and inclusive drama experience. As Tracey puts it, “Let’s come together to explore our creativity, build confidence, and make new friends in a supportive environment. No acting experience required, just bring your enthusiasm and an open mind.”
