Members Spotlight: The City of Oxford Charity

October 1, 2025

For more than 300 years, The City of Oxford Charity has been part of the fabric of Oxford life.

Founded in 1700 by local benefactors committed to easing poverty for anyone in need, regardless of faith or background, the charity continues that tradition today, offering both safe housing and vital financial support to some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.

Creating homes, not just housing

At Stone’s Court in St Clements, the charity provides almshouse accommodation for around 25 Oxford residents. The homes are arranged around beautiful gardens, offering not only affordability and security but also a sense of belonging. This communal style of living helps neighbours form friendships, reduces isolation, and supports independence while fostering connection.

As one resident shared:
“Stones Court quite literally brought me back to life, as I had nowhere to live following my treatment for cancer.”

Support when it’s needed most

Alongside housing, the charity provides targeted grants to Oxford residents facing illness, disability, or financial hardship.

Grants can cover essentials like furniture or household appliances, help people set up new accommodation after a crisis, or support young people under 25 with education and training costs. Schools in Oxford also benefit, receiving funding that ensures children from low-income families can join trips, holiday clubs, and extracurricular activities.

The impact is often immediate and deeply felt. One recipient told the team:
“We are beyond grateful for the opportunity you’ve given us to take our very first family holiday. Being able to enjoy a trip that truly accommodates our son’s disabilities has been nothing short of life changing.”

Looking to the future

With new funds arriving in 2026, the charity plans to expand its grants budget, refurbish its almshouses, and strengthen its governance. This will ensure it can continue meeting today’s challenges, from the rising cost of living to widening educational inequalities, while staying true to its long-standing mission of care.
