SSNAP – Supporting Sick Newborns and their Parents
Providing care, comfort, and connection for families at the John Radcliffe Hospital.
In the UK, one in ten babies need specialist care at birth. For many families, those first precious days of parenthood can suddenly become overwhelming: an unexpected world of incubators, monitors, and medical uncertainty. At the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, SSNAP (Support for the Sick Newborn and their Parents) is there to help families navigate this difficult start.
For over 40 years, SSNAP has supported the hospital’s Newborn Care Unit, ensuring that every baby, parent, and member of staff receives the care and resources they need. The charity combines emotional support, practical help, and investment in neonatal care to make a lasting difference for Oxfordshire families.
Supporting families when they need it most
At the heart of SSNAP’s work is its Family Care Team, who provide emotional and practical support every day of the year. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, helping with accommodation and meals, or simply creating space for parents to take a breath, their presence brings comfort when it’s needed most.
As one parent shared: “The days in SCBU are so intense – by far the hardest days of my life – but having the SSNAP team visit regularly, encourage you to take time for a much-needed coffee, and bring festive cheer over Christmas with carol singers and gifts for the babies is incredible.”
Staying connected after hospital
When families leave the neonatal unit, SSNAP’s Little SSNAPlings groups help them stay in touch and adjust to life at home. The groups offer a welcoming space where parents can share experiences, build confidence, and find understanding among others who have been through similar journeys.
Investing in care, training, and research
SSNAP helps fund equipment for the neonatal unit, from specialist monitors and incubators to breastfeeding chairs and family-friendly spaces. They also support NHS staff by funding professional development and training, helping the team stay at the forefront of neonatal care. When possible, the charity contributes to research projects that improve outcomes for premature and sick babies, ensuring progress for future families.
Powered by community support
SSNAP receives no statutory funding and relies entirely on donations, fundraising events, and individual supporters. Annual activities such as the Blenheim 7k, the Oxford Half Marathon, and the SSNAP Charity Dinner bring people together to raise funds and celebrate the charity’s work.
“Shaun and I will be eternally grateful to all the doctors and nurses at the John Radcliffe for everything they did for us and our son Rowan. None of this would be possible without SSNAP’s support. You are angels who walk this earth.”
